WE LEARN TO TEACH "BY STUDY AND ALSO BY FAITH," PART 1

Supporting scriptures and statements

1 Nephi 11:1
  • The Lord knows our desires. We need to ask Him. He is just waiting for us to ask.
  • Believe that the Lord will reveal unto us. "Ask and ye shall receive." If we pray and ponder our prayers may be answered. Even through revelation

D&C 19:38
  • "Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you." Prepare yourself for that spirit. What an awesome promise. "I will pour out my Spirit upon you."
  • Pray always and ponder always.. Have the spirit always.

We must seek to obtain the word

D&C 11:21
  • If we do not ask of Him we may fall, we need Him, we need to be lifted.
  • If we do not seek our Lord we may not be on the right path. Maybe our deeds will be come evil. We cannot let this happen!
  • Stay close to our Savior. Ask of Him. Seek Him. Follow Him. He is there with His hand out, waiting for us to reach for Him.
D&C 84: 85
  • This is one of my favorite scriptures. It give me such comfort. "Neither take ye thought beforehand."
  • I am always nervous about the things I should say, especially concerning the gospel to those who need to hear it. I get so scared that I might say the wrong thing, or might not say something that I should say. Then I remember this scripture. And I feel comforted. The spirit will guide us. We need not worry. Never. If we are living righteously and seeking for good and Him, we will be blessed with the spirit. And blessed in doing and giving and saying good.

TEACHING BY THE SPIRIT 2

Missionaries can invite the Holy Ghost into their teaching

D&C 84:62
  • It is our job to teach this gospel unto all the world.
  • "You, as the teacher, must do all in your power to prepare the hearts of men so the Spirit can teach." Elder Cook
  • We need to help prepare others so that they may receive the fullness of this gospel too. We cannot sit back, we need to get to work. Our brethren are out there.
D&C 100:7-8
  • "When the Spirit touches the heart, hearts are changed." Hearts are changed. By the Spirit we may know everything there is to know of truth.
  • We need to go out, share the Spirit, and change hearts through the Holy Ghost.
Missionaries should practice methods of teaching that edify

Romans 14:19
  • We need to teach in a way that edifies.
  • My favorite part of this scripture is "follow after things which make for peace." So simple. Peace.
  • "Personal testimony is the factor which turns people around in their living as they come into this Church." This is one very important method in teaching. Share your testimony. Personal testimonies have an amazing power and spirit that is so strong and so real it is hard to ever be denied. Testimonies are real.
D&C 50:13-14
  • "Preach my gospel." That's what this is all about. Teach by the comforter.
  • Here are some edifying teaching methods that the Savior used:
Pray
Use the scriptures
Use music
Share stories and examples
Use objects and pictures
Ask questions
Live the commandments
Expound
Use events

Every one of these methods can invite the influence of the spirit. I know this to be true. If our Lord Jesus Christ used these methods, it must be so.

TEACHING BY THE SPIRIT

Personal preparation and worthiness are necessary to teach by the spirit

Alma 5:46
  • "The Lord will bless prepared and worthy missionaries with His spirit." The first sentence says it all.
  • Some ways we can prepare ourselves for things, whether it be a mission or anything else, are by fasting and praying. Fast and prayer can help us find answers and manifestations of the truth. And answers will help us grow and be better prepared.
Moroni 10:4-5
  • By the power of the Holy Ghost you will know the truth of all things.
  • "If you prepare spiritually, the Holy Ghost will help you know what to do and say in your teaching." This is such a great comfort to me. I don't know about anyone else, but I am terrified to teach the gospel. I am soo excited to, but at the same time terrified. What if I say the wrong thing or cause the investigator to understand incorrectly and then he stops believing. Because of me. Well I know that by the power of the Holy Ghost I can say what needs to be said, and the listener will understand how he needs to understand. I am not speaking the spirit is speaking. I hope I can be prepared and worthy enough for that.

The companionship of the Holy Ghost 2

The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead

John 14:26
  • One of my favorite parts is how that the Holy Ghost will bring things to remembrance to you. "and bring all things to your remembrance." So things you have already learned in your lifetime, but may have forgotten, if needed or if you ask the Holy Ghost will bring it back to your remembrance. What an awesome thing. manifesteth Especially for me because I don't have a very good memory!
2 Nephi 26:13
  • The manifestation the Holy Ghost gives us of the Savior Jesus Christ is the most important thing.
  • "He manifesteth himself unto al those who believe in him."
There are many ways that the Holy Ghost influences our lives for good

We can receive spiritual impressions

D&C 9: 8-9
  • The spirit helps us in our decision making. We are prompted in knowing what is write or what is wrong.
  • If it is right you will feel a burning inside you. The spirit. If it is wrong you will have a stupor of thought and you wont be able to remember the things you are thinking that are wrong.
  • Listen to and recognize the promptings of the spirit.

We can receive a feeling of peace

D&C 6:22-23
  • When you have made a right choice the spirit will bless and comfort you with a feeling of peace. Letting you know you have made the right choice.
  • When revealing a truth unto you, the Holy Ghost will bless you with a feeling of peace to confirm the truth.

The Lord gives us revelation in His own time

D&C 88: 68
  • "Sanctify yourselves that you minds become single to God.." Be worthy, clean, and ready. Your minds single to God.
  • When you are prepared you can receive revelation. Be ready.

We should not expect revelation in all things

James 4:3
  • The Lord answers our prayers in different ways. We cannot always assume revelation.
  • Do not "ask amiss." Be diligent and in tune.

Sensitivity and obedience to the Spirit is one of a missionary's greatest resources

2 Nephi 33:1
  • I really love this scripture a lot! Even though men may be weak in words, the spirit will make it strong to those who hear it.
  • This is how missionaries teach. They speak by the power of the Holy Ghost and by that power it will be heard and brought to "the hearts of the children of men."
D&C 43:15-16
  • "Sanctify yourselves and ye shall be endowed with power." What an awesome promise. We can have the power to teach the children of men if we sanctify ourselves.
  • If not for us, do it for them we teach.
  • As missionaries what a wonderful thing this is. Have obedience to the spirit and let's embark in our missionary work.

THE COMPANIONSHIP OF THE HOLY GHOST

The light of Christ is a power for good in the lives of all people

John 12:46
  • I never really knew the the difference between the light of Christ and the Holy Ghost. I guess I knew they were different, but I never thought about it and how they are different.
  • Everyone has the light of Christ, whether they've been baptized into the church or not. The light of Christ is what is given to everyone that they may believe, through that light, and be baptized then receive the Holy Ghost.
Moroni 7:16
  • The light of Christ is what lets us know right from wrong.
  • Every man has the light of Christ, so every man knows right from wrong. Judge wisely, that we may choose the good over the evil always. "The way to judge is plain."
The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead

D&C 20:77
  • Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost is truly an amazing thing. Having that gift gives you the right and the privilege of having the Holy Ghost as a constant companion. Constant. What a remarkable blessing. Let's live worthy of this blessing.
3 Nephi 28:10
  • "The Father givith the gift of the Holy Ghost.." He also gave us the light of Christ and through the light of Christ we are able to recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost. The influence of the Holy ghost is something we can feel before we are baptized. We feel the spirit so that we may feel the truth and be baptized then have that spirit, the Holy Ghost, as a constant companion. The gift of the Holy Ghost.
There are many ways that the Holy Ghost influences our lives for good

D&C 46:7
  • Recognize the spirit. The scriptures will help you be better in tune. The spirit testifies unto you, even through the Holy Ghost. Be worthy and prepared for the spirit and it's promptings.

Personal Worthiness

Personal worhiness allows prospective missionaries to obtain temple blessings

Psalms 24: 3-5
  • Those who are rightous are worhty of entering into the Lord's house. The temple. To go on a mission to teach the gospel you need to be worthy and living rightously. And to go to the temple you will recieve greater blessings and like the manuel says, recieve more power.
D&C 109: 22-23
  • "that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy powers." I believe with no doubt that the temple will leave you armed with His powers. This is why it is important to go to the temple, especially before a mission. Arm yourselves with His powers, be his army, go and teach.
Repentance is a cleansing process that allows us to become worthy

Alma 36: 17
  • True faith in Jesus Christ leads us to repent of our sins
  • Alma remembered His Savior Jesus Christ who atoned for his sins. This helped Alma come to true repentance.
  • As soon as he called upon Jesus he remembered his sins no more.
D&C 58: 42
  • We need to be someone that the Lord can trust. We need to be worthy and prepared so that we can be ready in the mission feild.
  • Like Pres. Tanner said, " Prospective missionaries should realize that the Lord wants somebody in whom he can place every confidence, one who is clean and worthy in every way to represent him in the mission field." I can't say it any better than that. Let's be repent and be clean that we may be worthy representatives of Christ.

PERSONAL WORTHINESS

Personal Worthiness is necessary to accomplish missionary work.

D&C 39: 42
  • Save yourselves from wickedness. Be worthy. "Be ye clean."  Then teach.  Be worthy and teach.
  • I absolutely love what Pres. Hinckley says in the mission prep manuel. "This work is rigorous... It demands clean hands and a pure heart..."  Let's be ready for this work!
D&C 121:45
  • I love charity. The pure love of Christ.  "Let thy bowels also be full of charity." It really will help you have confidence and wax strong in the presence of God  I have learned that myself.  Let virtue garnish thy thoughts and be full of love and charity.

CALLED TO SERVE 2

For September 4, 2008

1. Missionaries assist in the gathering of Israel.
  • D&C 29:7
  • This is why we have missionaries! This is why I want to be a missionary!  I can't wait to better/more assist in the gathering of Israel. I know there are people out there who need my help there are things that only I or only you can do or say to help them. To gather the elect, they will hear. Brothers and sisters, they are ready for us.. Let's be ready for them.
  • 1 Nephi 22:4, 11-12
  • Many are lost from the knowledge.  The Lord has promised that they will ALL be "brought out of obscurity and out of darkness." Again, it is our job. Let's be a part in the fulfilling of the Lord's promise.
2. The focus of missionary work is to invite people to Christ.
  • Moroni 10:32
  • Come unto Christ. Be like Christ. Follow Christ. He is our Polar star, look unto Him.  We need to be perfected in Him and to become worthy, to deny ourselves of all ungodliness. Let is be like Christ, like Gods. Most importantly, "love God with all your might, mind and strength."
  • 1 Corinthians 9:14
  • Not only do we need to teach the gospel like I talked about early, we need to live the gospel. "They which preach the gospel should live... the gospel."  Live the gospel and perfect yourselves. Growing more and more worthy and righteous, growing closer to Christ.
3. A full-time mission call comes from the Lord through His authorized servants
  • Alma 42:31
  • The Lord calls missionaries so that others may learn of the gospel and come unto Christ.  They are called by His authorized servants. Then they receive authority temseves to teach the restored gospel.
  • D&C 64:29
  • Oh my heck I love this. I love how it uses the word agents.  "ye are agents.. on the Lord's errand."  Like secret agents. They don't mess around. :) They do their job!  We are on the Lord's errand. He called us to this job. Don't take this lightly!

CALLED TO SERVE

For September 2, 2008

1. Members of the restored gospel have the duty and privilege to share the restored gospel.

Abraham 2:9-11
  • What an awesome responsibility. A privilege. That "we shall bear this ministry and Priesthood unto all nations." I am so happy and proud every time I read this or think about this and our responsibility to share the gospel and bring the truth to our brothers and sisters. I am so excited!
D&C 88: 81
  • I hope we can all fulfill our covenant and share the restored gospel to those who do not have it in their lives yet. It is our job. I hope we will not let them down.
2. The Lord has said "The field is white already to harvest."

D&C 6:3
  • After reading this scripture then continuing on in the missionary prep manual "Many of Heavenly Father's children are prepared to hear and accept the restored gospel." It made me think about an experience that happened and is still happening in my life through someone else:
  • My bro had the opportunity to meet a non member in the airport during a layover, who I later met at the airport as well after they landed. My bro told her about the church and she believed it immediately and wants to know more. She is a golden investigator. She is so prepared. She is prepared and ready to be baptized. It has been such an amazing experience with her and watching her strength and growth and her faith as she is willing to do all she can because she knows without a doubt it is true. Even while the devil is beating down on her, she does not give up. Just a week ago she did not have the knowledge or truth and was living in confusion. But because my bro took the opportunity to get up and go sit by her and talk to her her life has now completely changed and she doesn't feel lost. Let us thrust in the sickle! The field is white and we must harvest!
Jeremiah 3:14
  • Like my new friend from the airport the Lord is bringing her to 'Zion.' He has been preparing her for a long time. She has told me a lot of her past and the things leading up to this moment in her life and her and I are both amazed at how mindful the Lord is of her and all of our needs. He will lead us.
